• Open to both U.S. graduates and IMGs
• USMLE Step 1 & Step 2 (CK) required
• Step 3 not required (optional)

The Categorical Internal Medicine Residency Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is a comprehensive three-year training program designed to develop well-rounded clinicians and future medical educators with a strong foundation in all aspects of internal medicine. The program provides extensive exposure to both inpatient and outpatient care, allowing residents to manage a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions. Located in Central Brooklyn, it offers a unique opportunity to work with a highly diverse, multicultural, and often underserved patient population, giving residents a “local global health” experience. Training is conducted across multiple healthcare systems, including state, city, federal, and private institutions, ensuring broad clinical exposure. The curriculum is based on the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) framework and integrates clinical practice with didactic learning, research opportunities, and mentorship. Residents also benefit from continuity clinic experiences, subspecialty rotations, and strong academic support, preparing them for independent practice or further fellowship training in various internal medicine subspecialties.
