The Internal Medicine Residency Program at UNC School of Medicine is an ACGME-accredited three-year residency program that provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases affecting adult patients. The program combines inpatient hospital-based training with outpatient ambulatory care experiences, allowing residents to develop strong clinical reasoning, patient management, and procedural skills. Residents receive exposure to general medicine, intensive care, emergency care, and multiple subspecialties through rotations at UNC Health facilities. The curriculum emphasizes evidence-based medicine, quality improvement, research, teaching skills, and professional development. The program prepares graduates for independent practice as internists and provides a strong foundation for pursuing fellowship training in subspecialties such as cardiology, gastroenterology, oncology, endocrinology, and infectious diseases.
