The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Reading Hospital, part of Tower Health, is a comprehensive three-year graduate medical education pathway designed to prepare physicians for independent practice or subspecialty training. Residents gain broad clinical experience in both hospital inpatient medicine and ambulatory care. The curriculum blends traditional core rotations in inpatient medicine, ICU, cardiology, nephrology, neurology, and ambulatory care with electives, night float shifts, and continuity clinics. There are unique educational features like the x+y rotation schedule, allowing structured blocks of inpatient and outpatient training. The program emphasizes decision-making skills, patient safety, quality improvement, and lifelong learning through reflective portfolios and mentorship. Residents also engage in community outreach programs such as Street Medicine and care for diverse populations with significant exposure to complex medical conditions — thanks to Reading Hospital’s status as a large academic medical center with one of the busiest emergency departments in Pennsylvania. The osteopathic recognition track integrates osteopathic principles of practice into training for eligible DO applicants. The faculty includes experienced clinician-educators who support scholarly activity and professional growth, preparing graduates for board certification and a range of future career pathways.
