Residency in Internal Medicine

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at UMass Chan Medical School is a 3-year residency designed to prepare physicians for careers in primary care, hospital medicine, or medical subspecialty fellowships. Training provides broad experience in inpatient and outpatient medicine, critical care, ambulatory care and medical subspecialties. The program uses a 3+2 schedule combining inpatient/ICU or night-float rotations with elective and ambulatory weeks, while also incorporating quality improvement, patient safety, Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), wellness, research and medical education opportunities. Residents can pursue dedicated Primary Care, Medical Education and Research tracks based on their career interests.

1. Submit the application through ERAS; applications sent directly to UMass are not accepted
2. Submit the ERAS application along with the required transcripts, USMLE transcript, 3 recommendation letters, MSPE/Dean’s Letter and personal statement
3. Applications are reviewed by the residency program and selected candidates receive an interview invitation
4. Participate in the NRMP Match for the categorical residency positions
5. Candidates who match must complete UMass Chan credentialing, Massachusetts licensure and employee-health requirements before appointment
