The UMass Chan Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences residency is a four-year ACGME-accredited program in Worcester, MA (with an optional six-year combined neuropsychiatry track), built around UMass Memorial Medical Center and a network of affiliated sites including community mental health centers, VA clinics, and a state psychiatric hospital. The first two years give residents a broad clinical foundation through inpatient psychiatry, neurology, medicine, and rotations in emergency, addiction, and geriatric psychiatry, alongside protected weekly teaching time and core coursework in psychotherapy, neuroscience, and psychopharmacology. In the later two years, training shifts toward outpatient care, with residents managing their own psychotherapy caseloads, working in specialty and psychopharmacology clinics, and choosing elective experiences in areas like community mental health, forensic psychiatry, or veteran care. Throughout the program, residents can tailor their path toward general adult psychiatry, an integrated child/adolescent track, or neuropsychiatry, graduating with broad clinical competence and eligibility for board certification.
