The General Psychiatry Residency Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is an ACGME-accredited four-year residency designed to train future leaders in clinical psychiatry, academic medicine, education, and psychiatric research. Residents receive extensive clinical experience across multiple nationally recognized institutions, including Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, and Prentice Women's Hospital. The curriculum combines progressive clinical responsibility with protected didactic education, psychotherapy training, interdisciplinary collaboration, and scholarly activity. Residents may pursue individualized career development through dedicated Research or Clinical Educator Specialty Tracks, allowing focused preparation for academic or clinician-educator careers. Training includes exposure to neuromodulation techniques such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), specialized programs in women's mental health, LGBTQ+ mental health, anxiety disorders, and early psychosis, as well as opportunities for global health and quality improvement initiatives. Graduates are well prepared for certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and for careers in academic psychiatry, community practice, hospital-based psychiatry, or competitive subspecialty fellowships.
