General Psychiatry Residency Program

The General Psychiatry Residency Training Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn is a four-year ACGME-accredited residency program designed to provide comprehensive training in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of psychiatric disorders across diverse patient populations. The program offers extensive clinical exposure through rotations at University Hospital at Downstate, NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, Brooklyn VA Medical Center, South Brooklyn Health Hospital, and Kingsboro Psychiatric Center. Residents receive training in adult inpatient psychiatry, outpatient psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology. The curriculum emphasizes evidence-based psychiatric care, neuroscience, community psychiatry, research activities, teaching skills, and multidisciplinary collaboration. The program prepares graduates for independent psychiatric practice, academic careers, and fellowship training in psychiatric subspecialties.
