About Course

The Psychiatry Residency Program affiliated with New York Medical College is an ACGME-accredited postgraduate medical training program designed to prepare physicians for comprehensive careers in psychiatry, behavioral sciences, academic medicine, community mental health, and psychiatric subspecialties. The residency is offered across multiple NYMC-affiliated clinical sites including Metropolitan Hospital Center, Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, Saint Mary’s Hospital/Saint Clare Health, and Westchester Medical Center, providing extensive exposure to diverse psychiatric patient populations and healthcare environments.
The residency curriculum provides broad clinical training in adult inpatient psychiatry, outpatient psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and community psychiatry. Residents gain hands-on experience managing mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, substance use disorders, psychiatric emergencies, and severe mental illness across inpatient and ambulatory care settings.
The PGY-1 year focuses on developing core psychiatric and medical competencies through rotations in internal medicine, emergency medicine, inpatient psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and psychiatric emergency services. PGY-2 residents receive advanced exposure in neurology, child psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, addiction services, and acute psychiatric care. PGY-3 and PGY-4 training emphasizes outpatient psychiatry, psychotherapy, elective rotations, leadership development, board preparation, and advanced subspecialty exposure.
Residents participate in structured didactic education including psychiatry grand rounds, journal clubs, board review sessions, psychotherapy training, morbidity and mortality conferences, neuroscience education, psychopharmacology lectures, and multidisciplinary case discussions. The curriculum strongly emphasizes evidence-based medicine, patient-centered care, cultural psychiatry, ethics, and professional development.
The program provides extensive exposure to community psychiatry and integrated behavioral health services including methadone/buprenorphine treatment programs, crisis intervention teams, outpatient behavioral clinics, psychiatric emergency services, and recovery-oriented mental health programs. Residents also gain experience in psychotherapy modalities, substance use treatment, and multidisciplinary behavioral healthcare delivery.
NYMC’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is actively involved in psychiatric research, neuroscience education, and academic scholarship. Residents are encouraged to participate in research projects, publications, poster presentations, quality improvement initiatives, and national psychiatry conferences during residency training. Faculty mentorship supports resident development in clinical excellence, psychotherapy training, leadership, academic productivity, and fellowship preparation.
