General Surgery Residency Program

1. Applicants must have a medical degree from an accredited medical school.
2. United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 results are required.
3. USMLE Step 2 scores should be submitted if available.
4. Applicants must submit a complete application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
5. The application must include a Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE), medical school transcript with current surgery grades, at least three letters of recommendation, personal statement, USMLE Step 1 results, USMLE Step 2 scores if available, and a color photograph.
6. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada must have a current Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate, no more than two years out of medical school, and at least one year of United States clinical experience.

The General Surgery Residency Program provides comprehensive five-year clinical training with progressive responsibility in operative and perioperative care across Stanford Hospital and affiliated institutions. Residents gain broad experience in areas including trauma and surgical critical care, surgical oncology, transplantation, vascular surgery, colorectal surgery, pediatric surgery, endocrine surgery, and minimally invasive surgery, with opportunities for research, teaching, and professional development.

1. Coordinate with the medical school's Dean's Office to submit the application through ERAS.
2. Complete the Common Application Form (CAF) and submit all required supporting documents.
3. Submit the application by the October 1 deadline; Stanford states that there are no exceptions.
4. Stanford reviews applications and selects candidates for interviews.
5. Categorical applicants participate in in-person interviews; the 2026–2027 cycle includes interview dates in November and December 2026.
6. Each categorical applicant has four interviews: one with the Program Director and Chair together, followed by three panel interviews.
7. Preliminary applicants have virtual interviews in January 2027.
8. Final residency placement is through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
