The General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Minnesota Medical School is a 5-year ACGME-accredited residency that provides comprehensive training in operative and perioperative care. Residents gain broad clinical and surgical experience in general surgery, trauma, surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, transplant surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, and minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. The program combines hands-on operative training with simulation, surgical skills development, didactic conferences, morbidity and mortality conferences, Grand Rounds, and research opportunities. Residents can also pursue specialized academic or rural surgery training tracks, preparing them for independent surgical practice or further fellowship training.
