The General Surgery Residency Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn is a five-year ACGME-accredited residency program designed to provide comprehensive training in the evaluation, diagnosis, surgical management, and postoperative care of a wide range of surgical conditions. The program offers extensive clinical exposure in general surgery and subspecialties including trauma surgery, surgical critical care, minimally invasive surgery, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, transplant surgery, and surgical oncology. Residents receive hands-on operative experience at affiliated clinical sites including University Hospital at Downstate, NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, South Brooklyn Health, Brooklyn VA Medical Center, and other partner institutions. The curriculum emphasizes operative skills, patient care, perioperative management, emergency surgery, research, teaching, and professional development, preparing graduates for independent practice in general surgery and advanced fellowship training in surgical specialties.

Eligibility
- Must hold an MD or DO degree (or equivalent medical degree such as MBBS) from an accredited medical school
- Eligible applicants include:
- Graduates of LCME-accredited medical schools in the USA or Canada
- Graduates of American Osteopathic Association (AOA)-accredited osteopathic medical schools
- International Medical Graduates (IMGs) with:
- Valid ECFMG certification, or
- A full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction
- Graduates of an LCME-approved 5th Pathway Program (if applicable)
- Applicants must meet SUNY Downstate Graduate Medical Education eligibility requirements
- Candidates should demonstrate:

- Motivation and interest in General Surgery
- Applicants must be eligible to participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)
