General Surgery Residency Program

1. Medical degree (Doctor of Medicine or equivalent).
2. Passing United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 and Step 2 scores with no failures.
3. Three or more letters of recommendation.
4. No felony charges.
5. For international medical graduates: medical school graduation within the past 4 years and significant work or research experience with a UAB-affiliated faculty member or faculty member closely connected with UAB.

The General Surgery Residency Program provides comprehensive training in the evaluation and surgical management of patients across a broad range of general surgical conditions. Residents receive extensive hands-on experience in operative procedures, preoperative assessment, postoperative care, trauma and critical care, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, and complex surgical cases. The program also provides opportunities for research, academic development, and multidisciplinary clinical training.

2. Submit the required documents, including examination scores, letters of recommendation, personal statement, curriculum vitae, and Medical Student Performance Evaluation.
3. UAB conducts a holistic review of applications.
4. Selected applicants are invited for an interview.
5. Successful candidates participate in the National Resident Matching Program.
6. Matched candidates begin the General Surgery Residency.
