The General Surgery Residency at Ochsner Health is a five-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited, non-pyramidal training program. It provides broad clinical and operative experience across all major areas of general surgery. The program typically accepts eight categorical residents and one preliminary resident at the Postgraduate Year 1 level annually. Residents train at six clinical facilities, including Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Ochsner Baptist, Ochsner Kenner, Ochsner Northshore and Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center in Houma. They also receive trauma and critical care experience at University Medical Center, a Level I trauma center. The curriculum combines supervised surgical procedures, clinical rotations, research, academic education and regular feedback from faculty. Ochsner Health is a nonprofit academic healthcare system serving Louisiana, Mississippi and surrounding Gulf South regions.
