General Surgery Residency Program

1. Applicants must hold a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or an equivalent medical qualification from a recognized medical school.
2. Applicants must demonstrate strong academic performance and clinical capabilities.
3. Applicants should demonstrate leadership qualities, exemplary professional and moral conduct, and a commitment to excellence in surgical training.
4. Applicants graduating from medical schools not accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) must submit an Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) status report.
5. International medical graduates must meet the program's applicable visa requirements. Foreign nationals accepted into the residency program are hired on J-1 visas only.
6. Applicants must satisfy the program's application and documentation requirements.

The General Surgery Residency Program is offered by the Department of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Emory University is a leading academic institution known for its medical education, clinical care and research through the Woodruff Health Sciences Center and Emory Healthcare. The institution provides a comprehensive learning environment supported by advanced medical facilities and experienced faculty. The five-year General Surgery Residency Program provides extensive clinical and operative training in general and specialized surgical procedures, including laparoscopic, endoscopic and robotic surgery. Residents gain experience across multiple clinical training facilities, with opportunities for research, advanced surgical techniques and subspecialty training.

1. Submit an application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for the Emory University Affiliated Hospitals General Surgery Training Program.
2. Complete and submit the ERAS common application form.
3. Upload the required personal statement.
4. Submit official medical school transcripts.
5. Provide the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) transcript.
6. Submit three letters of recommendation.
7. Ensure that the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) is submitted by the specified deadline.
8. Graduates of non-LCME-accredited medical schools must provide their ECFMG status report.
9. Eligible applicants are selected for first-year residency positions through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
