Overview

  • The General Surgery Residency Program affiliated with New York Medical College is an ACGME-accredited postgraduate surgical training program designed to prepare physicians for comprehensive careers in general surgery, surgical subspecialties, trauma care, academic surgery, and surgical research. The residency is conducted through major NYMC-affiliated tertiary care institutions including Westchester Medical Center, Metropolitan Hospital, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, and Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, providing residents with broad exposure to high-volume surgical cases and complex patient populations.
  • The program offers extensive clinical and operative training in trauma surgery, acute care surgery, minimally invasive surgery, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, endocrine surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, surgical oncology, pediatric surgery, transplant exposure, thoracic surgery, and critical care medicine. Residents participate in inpatient surgical services, trauma teams, emergency surgical consultations, outpatient surgical clinics, and multidisciplinary perioperative care.
  • Residents receive progressive operative responsibility throughout training and gain hands-on experience in laparoscopic surgery, robotic-assisted procedures, open abdominal surgery, trauma operations, vascular interventions, surgical endoscopy, and advanced perioperative management. The program strongly emphasizes surgical judgment, patient safety, evidence-based medicine, and technical skill development.
  • The curriculum integrates surgical grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, anatomy laboratories, simulation training, trauma conferences, board review sessions, journal clubs, and multidisciplinary tumor board discussions. Residents are encouraged to engage in clinical research, quality improvement projects, scholarly publications, and presentations at regional and national surgical conferences.
  • Westchester Medical Center serves as a Level I Trauma Center and provides extensive exposure to high-acuity trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, and surgical intensive care. Residents also gain experience in pediatric surgery through Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and community surgical practice through affiliated institutions. Faculty mentorship strongly supports resident growth in operative competency, leadership development, academic productivity, and fellowship preparation.
  • NYMC’s Department of Surgery is recognized for its strong academic environment, multidisciplinary collaboration, and commitment to advanced surgical education. The residency fosters professionalism, teamwork, ethical surgical practice, and compassionate patient care while preparing residents for independent surgical careers.
  • Graduates are prepared for American Board of Surgery (ABS) certification and future careers in general surgery, trauma/critical care surgery, minimally invasive surgery, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, surgical oncology, pediatric surgery, academic medicine, and surgical subspecialty fellowship training.
