Paid annually on UMass Chan's standard non-profit GME salary scale, increasing each PGY year
-
The UMass Chan General Surgery residency is a five-year, ACGME-accredited categorical program that accepts six PGY-1 residents annually and trains across the three UMass Memorial Medical Center campuses (University, Memorial, and Hahnemann) as well as affiliated community hospitals such as St. Vincent Hospital. The first two years combine general surgery with rotations through surgical subspecialties (vascular, trauma, pediatric surgery, cardiothoracic, and others), giving residents broad exposure to open, laparoscopic, endoscopic, and robotic techniques, while the final three years focus predominantly on general surgery with continued exposure to complex tertiary-care cases, including transplantation, hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery, and Level I trauma care. The program emphasizes hands-on operative experience, research participation with support for publications and national conference presentations, structured mentorship, and a strong institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion, preparing graduates for careers in academic or community general surgery, or for further fellowship subspecialization.
