The General Surgery Residency Program at Yale School of Medicine provides comprehensive five-year clinical training in general and specialised surgery, combining early operating-room experience, supervised surgical procedures, patient management, academic teaching and research opportunities. Residents receive clinical training in general surgery, surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, trauma surgery, transplantation, endocrine surgery, paediatric surgery, thoracic surgery, burns, bariatric surgery and surgical critical care. The programme follows a graded responsibility model, allowing residents to develop surgical skills, clinical judgement, leadership and independent decision-making throughout their training. Clinical rotations take place at Yale New Haven Hospital, Bridgeport Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Connecticut Healthcare System. The programme offers three training pathways: Categorical Residency, Preliminary Residency and the Surgical Scientist Training Program, which combines five years of clinical training with at least two years of dedicated research. Residents also have opportunities to pursue advanced academic qualifications, participate in scientific publications, attend national surgical conferences and receive mentorship from experienced faculty members.
