Anesthesiology Residency Program

1. Medical degree from an eligible accredited medical school.
2. Graduates of medical schools in the United States or Canada must be from schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
3. Graduates of United States or Canadian osteopathic medical schools must be from schools accredited by the American Osteopathic Association.
4. International medical graduates must possess a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate or an unrestricted United States medical license in the state where they will train.
5. Applicants must meet all UAB institutional requirements for residency appointment

The Anesthesiology Residency Program at UAB Heersink School of Medicine provides comprehensive, hands-on training in anesthesiology and perioperative care. The program combines diverse clinical experiences, structured didactic education, simulation training, progressive clinical responsibility, and bedside teaching. Residents receive training across general and subspecialty anesthesiology, including critical care, obstetric anesthesiology, pain and regional anesthesiology, pediatric anesthesiology, neuroanesthesiology, vascular anesthesia, and perioperative medicine. Opportunities for research, leadership, quality improvement, and patient safety are also integrated into the program.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
2. The program reviews applications based on factors including examination scores, medical school performance, and additional academic or professional activities.
3. Selected applicants are invited for an interview.
4. Interviews are generally conducted from October through December.
5. Applicants participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
6. Selected candidates complete UAB's required credentialing and appointment procedures before starting residency.
