Anesthesiology Residency Program

1. Senior medical students and medical school graduates are eligible to apply.
2. Applicants must submit a USMLE Step 1 pass/fail result.
3. USMLE Step 2 is not required at the time of application but must be completed before entering the program.
4. Residents must pass USMLE Step 3 before starting the CA-1 year.
5. At least three current letters of recommendation are required, with at least one preferably from an anesthesiologist.
6. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are eligible and must provide an ECFMG certificate, appropriate visa status, and evidence of English fluency.
7. The program sponsors J-1 visas for eligible international applicants.

The Anesthesiology Residency Program at the University of Minnesota Medical School provides comprehensive, hands-on training in anesthesiology through exposure to a diverse and complex patient population. The program combines clinical training in general and subspecialty anesthesia, regional anesthesia, acute and chronic pain management, critical care, simulation, and perioperative medicine with structured didactic education, research, quality improvement, and leadership opportunities. Residents also receive individualized mentorship and can pursue combined pathways such as an MBA, MHA, or MPH during residency.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
2. Submit the Common Application Form, medical school transcripts, personal statement, USMLE Step 1 result, MSPE/Dean’s Letter, and three letters of recommendation.
3. Complete the application by November 1; applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
4. Selected applicants are invited for interviews, generally conducted from October through January.
5. Register and participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
6. Successful applicants enter the four-year categorical anesthesiology residency, with the PGY-1 year integrated into the program.
