Ophthalmology Residency Program

The Ophthalmology Residency Program provides comprehensive clinical and surgical training following a required PGY-1 Internal Medicine internship. Residents complete three years of ophthalmology training covering glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastics, retina, cornea, cataract, refractive surgery, ocular pathology, and inpatient consultations. Training includes faculty-led lectures, weekly clinical conferences, journal clubs, wet-lab sessions, and high-volume surgical experience at Sue Anschutz-Rodgers Eye Center, VA Medical Center, Denver Health, and Children’s Hospital Colorado. Senior residents progressively gain greater surgical autonomy and responsibility, with cataract surgery volumes exceeding national averages and ACGME minimum requirements.

1. Applications are submitted through the San Francisco Match (SF Match) for the Ophthalmology Residency Matching Program
2. The program accepts 6 first-year residents annually
3. Training begins in July
4. Applicants must apply through SF Match and follow its application requirements and deadlines
5. Applicants who match into the Ophthalmology Residency receive instructions for matching into the required University of Colorado Internal Medicine PGY-1 year through ERAS/NRMP
6. The PGY-1 internship is mandatory before continuing into the three-year ophthalmology residency
7. Final appointments are made through the SF Match
