Ophthalmology Residency Program

• Must have a medical degree from a U.S. or Canadian medical school approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
• Must be eligible for California medical licensure by the second postgraduate year (PGY-2).
• Must successfully complete USMLE Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3 before beginning the residency program.
• Applicants who are International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must:
• Hold a valid ECFMG certificate.
• Have a J-1 clinical visa or proof of permanent residency status.
• Provide a current Medical Board of California evaluation status letter confirming eligibility for postgraduate medical training in California.

The Ophthalmology Residency Program at UC Irvine School of Medicine (Gavin Herbert Eye Institute), Irvine is an ACGME-accredited residency program that provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis, medical management, and surgical treatment of various eye diseases and disorders. The program offers extensive clinical and surgical exposure across major ophthalmology subspecialties, including cornea, glaucoma, retina, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastics, and uveitis. Residents receive hands-on experience through rotations at UC Irvine Medical Center, VA Long Beach Healthcare System, and the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, along with structured didactic education, research opportunities, and faculty mentorship. The program prepares graduates for independent ophthalmology practice or further subspecialty fellowship training.
