The Ophthalmology Residency Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is a comprehensive three-year training program designed to develop skilled and independent ophthalmologists through a balanced combination of clinical practice, surgical training, and academic learning. The program offers extensive exposure to a wide range of ophthalmic subspecialties including cornea, glaucoma, retina, pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastics, and neuro-ophthalmology, supported by a high patient volume and diverse case mix. Residents participate in structured rotations, outpatient and inpatient care, and progressively advanced surgical experiences under expert faculty supervision. In addition to hands-on training, the curriculum includes regular didactic sessions, case discussions, and research opportunities, ensuring residents build strong diagnostic, clinical decision-making, and surgical skills while preparing for board certification and future specialization.
