The Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Illinois College of Medicine (UICOM), Chicago is a comprehensive subspecialty training program designed to develop physicians into experts in both respiratory medicine and critical care. The fellowship provides in-depth clinical exposure to a wide range of pulmonary diseases such as asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and lung infections, along with intensive training in managing critically ill patients in medical intensive care units (ICUs). Fellows gain strong hands-on experience in essential procedures including bronchoscopy, airway management, and mechanical ventilation, while working in a multidisciplinary academic environment. The program typically includes a 3-year clinical track with an optional research-focused pathway, allowing fellows to engage in clinical research, teaching, and scholarly activities. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based practice, procedural skills, patient-centered care, and leadership development, preparing graduates for successful careers in academic medicine, research, or advanced clinical practice in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
