Fellowship in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine

1. Candidates must have completed the required prior residency training for the Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine fellowship.
2. Candidates must be eligible for an Alabama Medical License and Alabama Controlled Substance Certificate, with all required United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores completed at the time of application.
3. Candidates must be eligible for Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
4. International Medical Graduates must hold a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certificate.
5. Candidates must meet the eligibility requirements to train at the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Health Care System.
6. Required vaccinations must be completed according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for healthcare workers, unless an approved exemption applies.
7. There is no minimum USMLE score requirement; scores are considered as part of the overall application review.
8. The program can sponsor J-1 visas. H-1B visa sponsorship is not provided unless the fellow is currently within the United States.

The Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine provides comprehensive training in pulmonary and critical care medicine through hands-on clinical rotations, individualized mentorship, and clinical and laboratory-based research. Fellows gain experience across pulmonary subspecialties including Cystic Fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis, lung transplantation, and interventional pulmonary medicine. Critical care training includes experience in Medical Intensive Care Units, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), neurocritical care, surgical critical care, and circulatory support. The program also provides simulation-based procedural training, multidisciplinary conferences, clinical case discussions, and research opportunities through Clinical Scholar and Physician Scientist tracks.

1. Submit the application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), using program code 1007156F0. Only electronic ERAS applications are accepted; mailed, faxed, or emailed applications are not accepted.
2. Upload a current curriculum vitae (CV), updated within the previous three months.
3. Submit medical school transcripts and diploma if requested, along with the Medical School Dean’s Letter.
4. Provide three Letters of Recommendation, including letters from former program directors where applicable.
5. Provide a certificate or verification of previous residency training.
6. Applicants must meet Alabama Medical License, Alabama Controlled Substance Certificate, and Federal DEA registration eligibility requirements.
7. International Medical Graduates must provide a valid ECFMG Certificate.
8. The program preferentially reviews applicants who signal the program because of the high volume of applications.
9. Applications are reviewed beginning in July, interview invitations are released in early to mid-August, and interviews are conducted from late August through October.
10. Applicants participate in the applicable National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) process; the fellowship does not offer pre-match positions. The fellowship begins on July 1 each year.
