Fellowship in Nephrology

• Must have an MD / DO or equivalent medical degree
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency before fellowship start
• Must be board eligible or board certified in Internal Medicine (ABIM)
• Eligible for medical licensure in North Carolina
• ECFMG certification required for International Medical Graduates (IMGs)
• Strong academic background and interest in nephrology / kidney diseases
• Must fulfill all UNC Graduate Medical Education (GME) requirements

The Adult Nephrology Training Program at UNC School of Medicine (UNCSOM), Chapel Hill is an ACGME-accredited fellowship that provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis and management of kidney-related diseases. The program offers extensive clinical exposure across inpatient and outpatient settings, where fellows manage conditions such as chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, glomerular disorders, hypertension, and electrolyte imbalances. Fellows gain hands-on experience in dialysis care (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) and kidney transplantation, working within the renowned UNC Kidney Center and affiliated hospitals. The curriculum includes both clinical and research training pathways, allowing fellows to develop expertise in patient care as well as academic nephrology. With strong emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration, teaching, and research, the program prepares graduates for careers in clinical nephrology, academic medicine, and subspecialty areas like transplant nephrology.
