Fellowship in Nephrology

The Nephrology Fellowship Program at UCSF School of Medicine is an advanced clinical and research training program designed to prepare physicians for careers in academic nephrology, clinical practice, research, and healthcare leadership. The fellowship provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis and management of kidney disorders, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, glomerular diseases, dialysis, and kidney transplantation. Fellows receive clinical training across multiple healthcare settings, including UCSF Health, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, and San Francisco VA Medical Center, gaining experience with diverse and complex patient populations. The program offers Clinical and Research Tracks, with opportunities for specialized pathways in areas such as glomerular disease, polycystic kidney disease, global health, medical education, transplant nephrology, and clinical research. Fellows receive mentorship from expert faculty and participate in research projects, educational activities, and quality improvement initiatives to develop expertise as skilled nephrologists, educators, and physician-scientists.

2. Register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)

4. Submit required application documents:

6. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
7. Personal statement describing career goals, research experience, and nephrology interests
8. Three letters of recommendation (including a letter from the residency program director)
5. Application review by the UCSF Nephrology Fellowship Selection Committee
6. Selected applicants are invited for virtual fellowship interviews
7. Applicants submit their rank order list through NRMP
8. Final selection is completed through the NRMP Fellowship Match process
9. Matched candidates begin fellowship training at UCSF
