About Course

The Nephrology Fellowship at New York Medical College is an ACGME-accredited postgraduate subspecialty training program designed to prepare physicians for advanced careers in nephrology, dialysis medicine, transplant nephrology, and academic medicine. The fellowship primarily operates through NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan and collaborates closely with NYMC’s major clinical affiliate, Westchester Medical Center.
The program provides comprehensive exposure to acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, electrolyte disorders, glomerular diseases, dialysis medicine, renal transplantation, and critical care nephrology. Fellows actively participate in inpatient consultation services, outpatient nephrology clinics, dialysis unit management, and multidisciplinary patient care teams.
The curriculum integrates bedside teaching, academic conferences, nephrology case discussions, pathology review sessions, journal clubs, and evidence-based clinical education. Fellows receive hands-on training in hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), renal biopsy interpretation, and management of critically ill renal patients.
NYMC’s nephrology division is involved in both clinical and research activities, including NIH-supported and industry-sponsored research projects focused on chronic kidney disease, dialysis disorders, and transplantation medicine. The fellowship strongly emphasizes compassionate patient care, clinical reasoning, procedural competency, and academic development.
Faculty mentorship plays a major role in fellow development through guidance in research participation, board preparation, quality improvement initiatives, and scholarly publications. Fellows are encouraged to attend national nephrology conferences and participate in clinical research activities throughout training.
The training environment provides exposure to culturally diverse and medically complex patient populations across major New York healthcare systems. Graduates are prepared for American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification in Nephrology and future careers in academic nephrology, transplant medicine, dialysis leadership, hospital systems, and private practice.
