Fellowship in Infectious Diseases (FID)

• Must hold an MD / DO or equivalent medical degree from an accredited institution
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency prior to fellowship start
• Must be board eligible or board certified in Internal Medicine (ABIM)
• Eligible for medical licensure in North Carolina before joining the program
• ECFMG certification required for International Medical Graduates (IMGs)
• Strong interest in infectious diseases, clinical care, research, or public health
• Must meet all UNC Graduate Medical Education (GME) requirements for appointment

The Fellowship in Infectious Diseases (FID) at UNC School of Medicine (UNCSOM), Chapel Hill is a comprehensive, ACGME-accredited training program designed to develop physicians into experts in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases. The program provides extensive clinical exposure through inpatient consultation services, outpatient infectious disease clinics, HIV care programs, transplant and immunocompromised patient management, and hospital epidemiology. Fellows gain hands-on experience managing a wide spectrum of infections, including bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic diseases, while building strong expertise in antimicrobial stewardship and infection control practices. In addition to clinical training, the fellowship emphasizes research, global health, and academic development, offering opportunities to participate in clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and collaborative public health initiatives. The program prepares graduates for successful careers in academic medicine, clinical practice, public health, and infectious disease research.
