About Course

The Infectious Diseases & Immunology Fellowship at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is a nationally recognized ACGME-accredited training program that prepares physicians for careers in clinical infectious diseases, academic medicine, public health, medical education, and biomedical research. The program has a longstanding reputation for excellence in patient care, scholarship, and innovation.
The fellowship provides extensive clinical exposure through diverse inpatient and outpatient training environments. Fellows care for patients with common and highly complex infectious diseases, including HIV infection, transplant-associated infections, multidrug-resistant organisms, tuberculosis, fungal infections, and emerging infectious diseases.
A major strength of the program is its flexibility. Fellows can pursue either a Clinician-Educator Track or an Investigator Track depending on their long-term career goals. Both pathways provide comprehensive preparation for board certification while allowing trainees to customize their educational experience.
The Clinician-Educator Track emphasizes advanced clinical care, infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, transplant infectious diseases, HIV medicine, quality improvement, and medical education. Fellows interested in teaching and healthcare leadership benefit from substantial mentorship and scholarly opportunities.
The Investigator Track is designed for trainees pursuing careers as physician-scientists. Fellows receive intensive research mentorship and training in clinical investigation, translational science, epidemiology, outcomes research, clinical trials, and laboratory-based research. Many fellows pursue an additional research-focused third year.
The fellowship also offers a dedicated Transplant Infectious Diseases Concentration that provides additional training in infections affecting solid-organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients. This specialized pathway includes expanded clinical exposure and focused research opportunities.
Research opportunities are exceptionally broad and include collaborations with faculty in Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Pathology, Population Health, and other NYU departments. Fellows participate in projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), industry sponsors, and institutional research programs.
Educational activities include grand rounds, board review sessions, journal clubs, microbiology conferences, case conferences, research seminars, and mentorship programs. Graduates are well prepared for careers in academic infectious diseases, clinical practice, public health leadership, infection prevention, and biomedical research.
