Graduates must meet the University of Minnesota Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology's general fellowship requirements, including graduation from an LCME-accredited U.S./Canadian medical school, AOA-accredited U.S. osteopathic school, or qualifying international medical school with a valid ECFMG certificate or unrestricted U.S. medical license.
Applicants must be fluent in spoken and written English.
Applicants must meet state and federal employment requirements and be able to pass a criminal background check.

About Course

The Hematopathology Fellowship at the University of Minnesota provides advanced training in adult and pediatric hematology, oncology, and bone marrow transplantation. Fellows develop expertise in the interpretation of bone marrow biopsies, peripheral blood smears, lymph nodes and tissues, body fluids, and flow cytometry specimens. The curriculum includes 6.5 months of morphology, 2.5 months of flow cytometry, 1 month of research, and 2 months of electives such as molecular pathology, coagulation, cytogenetics, hemoglobin electrophoresis, and bone marrow biopsy procedures. Fellows also participate in daily consensus conferences, research projects, national presentations, and the day-to-day management of the bone marrow laboratory.

Admission Process

Complete the University of Minnesota Fellowship Application Form.
Submit an updated CV.
Submit a letter of intent describing your hematopathology interests, relevant experience, and career goals.
Submit USMLE/COMLEX scores and a copy of your medical diploma.
Submit three letters of recommendation.
International medical graduates must provide a valid ECFMG certificate and meet J-1 visa requirements, if applicable.
Applications are reviewed, and selected candidates are invited for an interview.
The Hematopathology Fellowship participates in the NRMP Match; applicants should follow the fellowship's current NRMP application timeline.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with the department recommending submission by October 1 of the year preceding the fellowship start date.
