Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a three-year ACGME-accredited program designed to develop highly skilled cardiologists through rigorous clinical training, research, and academic mentorship. Based primarily at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, one of the nation's leading academic medical centers, the fellowship also includes training at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, and NUCATS. The curriculum includes at least 24 months of comprehensive clinical training and a minimum of six months of protected research, with an additional six months available for advanced clinical electives or expanded research. Fellows gain extensive experience in coronary care, cardiac catheterization, echocardiography, electrophysiology, nuclear cardiology, cardiac CT and MRI, preventive cardiology, vascular medicine, advanced heart failure, and consultative cardiology. Training includes participation in daily educational conferences, weekly Cardiology Grand Rounds, journal clubs, multidisciplinary case conferences, and research seminars. Fellows are expected to complete original research, present their work at national scientific meetings, and publish in peer-reviewed journals. Graduates are well prepared for careers in academic medicine, private practice, or advanced subspecialty fellowships such as Interventional Cardiology, Electrophysiology, Advanced Heart Failure, and Cardiac Imaging.

Step 1: Complete an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency and obtain eligibility for an Illinois medical license.

Step 2: Register through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Step 3: Submit the required application documents:

• Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
• Medical School Transcripts
• USMLE Step I, II and III score reports
• Three Letters of Recommendation (including one from the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director)

Step 4: Ensure all application materials are uploaded to ERAS by September 1.

Step 5: Applications are reviewed by the Fellowship Selection Committee.

Step 6: Selected applicants are invited for interviews.

Step 7: Applicants participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Matched candidates complete McGaw Medical Center credentialing, licensing, and onboarding before beginning fellowship training.
