Overview
The Anesthesiology Residency Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is a comprehensive 4-year postgraduate training program designed to develop expertise in anesthesiology, perioperative medicine, and critical care. The program begins with a foundational internship year (PGY-1) that provides broad clinical exposure across multiple specialties, followed by three years of advanced clinical anesthesia training (PGY-2 to PGY-4). Residents gain extensive hands-on experience in a high-volume academic medical setting, managing diverse and complex surgical cases across subspecialties such as general anesthesia, obstetrics, trauma, cardiothoracic, neuro-anesthesia, and intensive care. The program integrates clinical practice with structured academic learning through lectures, simulation training, and board exam preparation. It also encourages participation in research and scholarly activities. Overall, the program aims to produce competent, compassionate, and board-certified anesthesiologists capable of independent practice and academic advancement.
