About Course

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program affiliated with New York Medical College is an ACGME-accredited postgraduate medical training program designed to prepare physicians for comprehensive careers in rehabilitation medicine, neuromuscular medicine, pain management, and functional restoration. The residency is primarily conducted through Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, one of the leading rehabilitation centers in the United States and a major academic affiliate of NYMC. Additional training exposure is provided through Westchester Medical Center and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital.
The program provides extensive clinical training in inpatient rehabilitation, musculoskeletal medicine, electrodiagnostic medicine, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation, stroke rehabilitation, amputee rehabilitation, sports medicine, and chronic pain management. Residents gain hands-on experience managing patients with neurological disorders, orthopedic injuries, functional impairments, and disabling medical conditions across multidisciplinary rehabilitation settings.
The curriculum integrates inpatient rehabilitation rotations, outpatient PM&R clinics, musculoskeletal ultrasound exposure, EMG/NCS training, prosthetics and orthotics management, interventional pain procedures, and multidisciplinary therapy collaboration. Residents work closely with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, psychologists, and rehabilitation nurses to develop comprehensive patient-centered rehabilitation plans.
Academic education includes PM&R grand rounds, journal clubs, board review conferences, anatomy workshops, musculoskeletal ultrasound training, electrodiagnostic teaching sessions, research seminars, and multidisciplinary case conferences. Residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research, scholarly publications, quality improvement projects, and national rehabilitation medicine conferences throughout training.
Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is internationally recognized for rehabilitation research, stroke recovery programs, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, and neurorehabilitation innovation. The residency program provides exposure to advanced rehabilitation technologies including robotic rehabilitation systems, adaptive devices, neurostimulation therapies, gait analysis laboratories, and assistive mobility technologies. Faculty mentorship strongly emphasizes functional medicine, evidence-based rehabilitation care, patient advocacy, leadership development, and academic growth.
