Ophthalmology Residency Program

The Ophthalmology Residency Program at UAB Heersink School of Medicine provides comprehensive four-year training, including an integrated internship year followed by three years of dedicated ophthalmology training. Residents gain extensive clinical and surgical experience in cornea, glaucoma, retina and vitreous diseases, neuro-ophthalmology, uveitis, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, oculoplastic surgery, and low-vision rehabilitation. Training is conducted across multiple affiliated clinical sites, providing exposure to diverse and complex ophthalmic conditions. The program also emphasizes progressive surgical skill development, research, and comprehensive patient care.

1. Prepare the required ophthalmology residency application and supporting documents.
2. Submit the application through the San Francisco Match by the program's posted deadline.
3. The UAB Ophthalmology Residency Program reviews applications based on its eligibility and selection criteria.
4. Selected applicants are invited to participate in the residency interview process.
5. Five residents are accepted each year exclusively through the San Francisco Matching Program.
6. Successful applicants enter the four-year Ophthalmology Residency Program, which includes an integrated first postgraduate year followed by three years of ophthalmology training.
