• The Ophthalmology Residency Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is one of the most respected ophthalmic training programs in the United States. The residency is designed to provide comprehensive education in both medical and surgical ophthalmology while developing future leaders in patient care, research, and academic medicine. Residents receive extensive exposure to diverse ophthalmic conditions ranging from routine eye diseases to highly complex surgical and neuro-ophthalmic disorders.
• Training takes place across several major clinical institutions including NYU Langone Health hospitals, the NYU Langone Eye Center, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, the Manhattan VA Medical Center, and affiliated specialty clinics. These sites provide access to a large and diverse patient population with a broad spectrum of ophthalmic diseases and surgical cases.
• The curriculum is structured to provide progressive responsibility in outpatient ophthalmology, inpatient consultations, emergency eye care, laser procedures, microsurgery, and advanced ophthalmic diagnostics. Residents gain extensive experience in cataract surgery, glaucoma management, retinal disease treatment, corneal transplantation, pediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, and oculoplastic surgery.
• A major strength of the program is its surgical training. Residents perform increasing numbers of ophthalmic surgical procedures under expert faculty supervision while developing advanced microsurgical skills using modern simulation laboratories and surgical technologies. Clinical exposure is supported by structured didactic teaching, grand rounds, journal clubs, case conferences, and subspecialty seminars.
• The department has a strong commitment to research and innovation in vision science. Residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research, translational studies, publications, and presentations at national and international ophthalmology conferences. Faculty mentorship supports scholarly development throughout training.
• Residents work alongside nationally recognized ophthalmologists and subspecialists who contribute to advances in cataract surgery, retinal disease treatment, glaucoma management, corneal transplantation, ocular oncology, and vision research. This multidisciplinary environment provides comprehensive educational exposure across all major ophthalmology subspecialties.
• Graduates of the program frequently pursue highly competitive fellowships in retina, cornea, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, and ophthalmic oncology. The residency prepares physicians for successful careers in academic medicine, subspecialty practice, clinical research, and comprehensive ophthalmology.

Step 4:

Step 5:

Participate in the Ophthalmology Residency Match process through SF Match.

Step 8:

Matched applicants complete onboarding requirements and begin residency training in July.
