Ophthalmology Residency Program

1. Applicants must hold a medical degree from an eligible medical school.
2. Graduates of United States or Canadian medical schools must have graduated from a school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the applicable Canadian accreditation body.
3. International medical graduates must have graduated from a medical school evaluated by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and meet applicable certification requirements.
4. Applicants must fulfil the eligibility and certification requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Board of Ophthalmology, the Medical Board of California, and Stanford University School of Medicine.
5. International applicants must meet Stanford's applicable visa requirements; Stanford indicates that J-1 visa sponsorship is available for eligible international medical graduates.

The Ophthalmology Residency Program at Stanford Medicine Health Care (SHC) provides comprehensive clinical and surgical training in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of eye diseases and vision disorders. Residents gain hands-on experience in ophthalmic surgery, patient care, and subspecialties such as cornea, glaucoma, retina, pediatric ophthalmology, and neuro-ophthalmology, along with opportunities for clinical research and academic development. 1. Apply through the San Francisco Match (SF Match) Ophthalmology Matching Program.
2. Complete and submit the application with the required information through the official matching system.
3. Submit the application before the published deadline. For the 2027 entry cycle, the deadline is September 1, 2026.
4. Attend a virtual interview if shortlisted by the program.
5. Submit your rank preferences through the matching system according to its instructions.
6. Await the official match results.
7. Complete the required appointment, credential verification, and onboarding procedures before joining the residency program.
8. Matched applicants must also register for the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for the separate preliminary internship position, using program code 1820440P4.
