The UCLA Stein Eye Institute Ophthalmology Residency provides comprehensive training in general ophthalmology and ophthalmic subspecialties, combining clinical care, surgical training, research, and academic education. Residents train at multiple major medical centers, including the Stein Eye Institute, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, and Veterans Affairs healthcare centers. Training progresses from foundational ophthalmic examination and medical management in the first year to advanced subspecialty, surgical, teaching, and patient-care responsibilities in later years. Residents begin surgical training during the first year and progressively develop independent surgical skills, while research is an integral part of the program.
