Hematology & Oncology Fellowship

The Hematology and Oncology Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a comprehensive three-year program providing broad hands-on clinical training in hematology and medical oncology. Fellows train across UAB Hospital, Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center, UAB Highlands, The Kirklin Clinic, and Children’s Hospital of Alabama, gaining exposure to diverse hematologic disorders and solid tumors. Training includes inpatient consultation, specialized ambulatory clinics, coagulation, hematopathology, multidisciplinary cancer care, and elective rotations. Fellows participate in case presentations, core curriculum sessions, Hematology and Oncology Grand Rounds, tumor boards, hematopathology reviews, journal clubs, and quality improvement activities. From the second year, fellows dedicate significant time to clinical or basic research, with an optional additional year available for advanced clinical and research training.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), Program Number 1007155F0.
2. Submit a current Curriculum Vitae (CV), updated within three months.
3. Submit medical school transcripts and diploma if requested.
4. Submit the Medical School Dean’s Letter.
5. Submit three Letters of Recommendation, including letters from former program directors.
6. Submit certification or verification of previous residency training.
7. Provide evidence of eligibility for an Alabama medical license and Controlled Substance Certificate.
8. Provide evidence of eligibility for Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
9. International Medical Graduates must submit a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate.
10. Applications are accepted through ERAS from July through September, reviewed in August, with interview invitations released in September and interviews beginning in October.
11. The program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), with the fellowship beginning July 1.
