Family Medicine Residency

The Family Medicine Residency Program at UAB Heersink School of Medicine provides comprehensive, full-spectrum training in family medicine through didactic education, hands-on clinical experience, mentorship, and continuity of patient care. Residents receive training in outpatient and inpatient care, obstetrics, pediatrics, emergency medicine, preventive and health-promoting care, procedures, community medicine, and rural medicine. The program emphasizes whole-person, patient-centered care and prepares residents to serve diverse, rural, urban underserved, and vulnerable populations across clinics, hospitals, emergency departments, mobile health units, and nursing facilities.

1. Submit the residency application through the Electronic Residency Application Service.
2. Provide the required application documents, including:

4. Personal statement
5. Medical School Performance Evaluation or Dean's Letter
6. Medical school and examination transcripts
7. Three letters of recommendation
3. Submit United States Medical Licensing Examination or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination transcripts as applicable.
4. Register for the National Resident Matching Program, through which residency positions are filled.
5. Eligible applicants are reviewed and selected for interviews.
6. Applicants who successfully match through the National Resident Matching Program are offered a residency position.
