Family Medicine Residency

• Must be a graduate of an LCME- or COCA-accredited medical school (MD/DO) or an ECFMG-certified International Medical Graduate (IMG)
• Must have completed USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2 CK (or COMLEX equivalents) before submitting the application
• Preference is given to:
• Recent medical graduates (within the last 3 years)
• Applicants with strong academic performance
• Candidates demonstrating interest in Family Medicine, underserved care, and diverse communities
• International Medical Graduates must provide:
• Valid ECFMG certification
• Proof of passing required licensing examinations
• Eligibility for California postgraduate medical training requirements
• Applicants must meet UCI and California medical licensing requirements before starting residency training.

The Family Medicine Residency Program at UC Irvine School of Medicine is a three-year ACGME-accredited residency program that combines university-based academic training with community-focused primary care education. The program prepares residents to provide comprehensive, patient-centered healthcare across all stages of life, including preventive care, acute and chronic disease management, pediatrics, women’s health, behavioral health, geriatrics, and community medicine. Residents receive hands-on clinical training at diverse healthcare settings, including UCI Medical Center and UCI Family Health Center–Santa Ana, serving a broad and multicultural patient population. The curriculum emphasizes clinical excellence, health equity, community engagement, leadership, research, and specialized training opportunities such as sports medicine, reproductive health, public health, and advocacy. The program aims to develop skilled family physicians equipped to deliver high-quality, compassionate care and pursue careers in clinical practice, education, and healthcare leadership.
