Overview
- The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is one of the most respected and academically rigorous emergency medicine training programs in the United States. Conducted through the Department of Emergency Medicine, the residency is designed to train highly skilled emergency physicians capable of managing critically ill and injured patients in diverse and high-acuity clinical environments.
- Residents receive extensive hands-on clinical exposure at major affiliated institutions including Bellevue Hospital Center, NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. Bellevue Hospital, one of the busiest and oldest public hospitals in the country, provides exceptional exposure to trauma, emergency procedures, toxicology, psychiatric emergencies, and complex underserved patient populations.
- The four-year curriculum combines intensive emergency department training with dedicated rotations in trauma surgery, pediatric emergency medicine, intensive care, anesthesia, ultrasound, toxicology, EMS, and disaster medicine. Residents gain experience managing a wide range of medical, surgical, neurological, pediatric, psychiatric, and traumatic emergencies.
- The program strongly emphasizes procedural competency, bedside ultrasound, simulation-based education, academic scholarship, leadership development, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Residents participate in conferences, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality reviews, journal clubs, and simulation labs throughout training.
- NYU’s Department of Emergency Medicine is nationally recognized for innovation in emergency care research, medical education, simulation training, and emergency ultrasound. Residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research projects, presentations, and publications with mentorship from experienced faculty members.
- Graduates of the program are highly successful in obtaining fellowships and leadership positions in emergency medicine subspecialties including ultrasound, toxicology, pediatric emergency medicine, EMS, critical care, simulation, and healthcare administration. The residency prepares physicians for careers in academic medicine, trauma centers, community emergency departments, and advanced fellowship training.
