Overview

  • The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at New York Medical College is an ACGME-accredited postgraduate medical training program designed to prepare physicians for comprehensive careers in emergency medicine and acute patient care. The residency is primarily based at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan and Harlem Hospital Center, offering residents exposure to diverse patient populations and high-volume urban emergency departments. The program is recognized as one of the oldest emergency medicine residency programs in New York State and was the first emergency medicine residency established in Manhattan.
  • The curriculum combines intensive clinical exposure with structured academic learning through bedside teaching, simulation training, ultrasound education, trauma management, pediatric emergency care, toxicology, critical care rotations, and disaster medicine training. Residents work alongside experienced emergency physicians and multidisciplinary healthcare teams while managing a wide range of medical, surgical, psychiatric, and trauma emergencies.
  • The residency emphasizes evidence-based medicine, procedural competency, patient safety, leadership development, and professional growth. Residents participate in weekly conferences, morbidity and mortality discussions, journal clubs, simulation labs, and research activities. Specialized training opportunities are available in emergency ultrasound, EMS, toxicology, critical care, and academic emergency medicine.
  • The program’s urban training environment provides exposure to complex pathology, underserved populations, and culturally diverse communities, helping residents develop strong clinical judgment and decision-making abilities under pressure. Graduates are well-prepared for American Board of Emergency Medicine certification, fellowship opportunities, and careers in academic institutions, trauma centers, or community emergency departments.
