Overview

The Urology Residency Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is one of the most competitive and respected urology training programs in the United States. The program is designed to develop highly skilled urologists capable of providing comprehensive medical and surgical care across all major urologic subspecialties. Residents train under nationally and internationally recognized faculty who are leaders in patient care, education, and research.
The five-year curriculum provides progressive autonomy and responsibility, allowing residents to develop independent clinical judgment and advanced surgical skills. Training begins with a combination of general surgery and urology during the intern year and transitions into dedicated urology education throughout the remaining years of residency.
Residents rotate through multiple high-volume hospitals, including Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, Bellevue Hospital, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. These institutions provide exposure to a diverse patient population and a broad spectrum of urologic diseases and surgical procedures.
Clinical training includes robotic-assisted surgery, laparoscopic surgery, endoscopic procedures, laser surgery, reconstructive surgery, pediatric urology, oncology, infertility, sexual medicine, female pelvic medicine, and complex stone disease management. Residents gain extensive hands-on experience using advanced surgical technologies and minimally invasive techniques.
A distinguishing feature of the program is its dedicated research experience. During PGY-3, residents work closely with faculty mentors on clinical research projects and are expected to contribute to peer-reviewed publications and academic presentations. Research opportunities span oncology, robotics, reconstructive surgery, stone disease, and translational urologic science.
The academic curriculum includes weekly lectures, grand rounds, journal clubs, morbidity and mortality conferences, surgical skills laboratories, multidisciplinary conferences, and board preparation sessions. Residents also attend major national meetings such as the American Urological Association Annual Meeting and specialty society conferences.
The Department of Urology at NYU Langone Health has a long-standing reputation for excellence in clinical care, research innovation, and resident education. Faculty members are internationally recognized experts who contribute significantly to advancements in robotic surgery, oncology, reconstructive urology, gender-affirming surgery, and minimally invasive therapies.
