Overview

  • The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is one of the leading subspecialty training programs in the United States. The fellowship is designed to prepare physicians for advanced careers in pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, academic medicine, clinical research, and healthcare leadership. The program combines rigorous clinical training with extensive research opportunities and multidisciplinary education.
  • Fellows train across several major institutions including Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. These clinical environments provide exposure to diverse patient populations and a wide range of pulmonary and critical illnesses, including complex respiratory diseases, severe infections, organ failure syndromes, and advanced intensive care cases.
  • The fellowship emphasizes comprehensive pulmonary disease management. Fellows gain expertise in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, nontuberculous mycobacterial disease, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease, occupational lung disease, and lung cancer. Fellows learn both inpatient and outpatient management strategies while working closely with subspecialty experts.
  • Critical care training is a major component of the curriculum. Fellows rotate through multiple intensive care units where they manage patients with respiratory failure, septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multi-organ failure, cardiac emergencies, neurologic critical illness, and postoperative complications. Training emphasizes evidence-based critical care and multidisciplinary teamwork.
  • Procedural training is extensive throughout fellowship. Fellows become proficient in bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), robotic bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, chest tube placement, pleural catheter insertion, airway management, central venous catheterization, arterial line placement, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). Dedicated simulation workshops help fellows develop procedural competence and confidence before clinical practice.
  • The curriculum includes specialized exposure to interventional pulmonology, pulmonary hypertension programs, interstitial lung disease clinics, lung transplant medicine, sleep medicine, advanced bronchoscopy services, and multidisciplinary pulmonary conferences. Fellows receive training in both common and highly complex pulmonary conditions encountered in tertiary referral centers.
  • Research opportunities are available throughout training. Fellows may participate in clinical trials, translational lung research, pulmonary physiology studies, critical care investigations, airway disease research, pulmonary hypertension projects, and quality improvement initiatives. Faculty mentorship supports scholarly productivity, academic presentations, and career development.
  • Educational activities include grand rounds, journal clubs, board review sessions, radiology conferences, multidisciplinary ILD conferences, pulmonary hypertension conferences, simulation-based education, tumor boards, case conferences, and research seminars. Fellows work closely with nationally recognized faculty members who are leaders in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine.
  • Graduates of the fellowship pursue careers in academic pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, interventional pulmonology, lung transplantation, pulmonary hypertension programs, research institutions, and private practice. The fellowship prepares physicians for leadership roles in modern pulmonary and critical care medicine worldwide.
