Overview
- The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is offered through the internationally renowned Rusk Rehabilitation, one of the most respected rehabilitation medicine centers in the world. The program is fully accredited by the ACGME and is recognized as one of the largest and most comprehensive PM&R residency programs in the United States. It has trained more rehabilitation physicians than any other institution worldwide and continues to be a leader in rehabilitation education, clinical care, and research.
- Residents receive extensive training across multiple NYU Langone Health facilities, including NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYU Langone Orthopedic Center, Bellevue Hospital Center, NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center, and the Manhattan and Brooklyn campuses of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. These diverse training environments expose residents to a broad spectrum of rehabilitation conditions and patient populations.
- The curriculum follows a structured pyramidal design where residents develop strong inpatient rehabilitation skills early in training and progressively transition toward advanced outpatient rehabilitation experiences. This model allows residents to build comprehensive expertise across all major areas of physical medicine and rehabilitation.
- Residents gain hands-on experience treating patients with spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, chronic pain disorders, musculoskeletal injuries, orthopedic conditions, cardiopulmonary diseases, and accident-related trauma. Training emphasizes restoring patient function, independence, mobility, and quality of life through multidisciplinary care.
- The program maintains a strong academic foundation through structured lectures, grand rounds, journal clubs, case discussions, board review sessions, and interdisciplinary conferences. Weekly educational activities are led by nationally recognized faculty members from rehabilitation medicine, neurology, orthopedic surgery, radiology, and related specialties.
- Research and scholarly development are integral components of residency training. Residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research, rehabilitation innovation projects, quality improvement initiatives, and academic publications. Faculty mentorship supports residents pursuing academic careers and advanced subspecialty training.
- The residency also provides exposure to advanced rehabilitation technologies, electrodiagnostic medicine, musculoskeletal medicine, sports rehabilitation, neurorehabilitation, and pain management. Graduates are well prepared for careers in general physiatry, academic medicine, rehabilitation leadership, or fellowship training in areas such as sports medicine, brain injury medicine, pain medicine, spinal cord injury medicine, and pediatric rehabilitation.
