Overview

  • The Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program affiliated with New York Medical College is an ACGME-accredited postgraduate surgical training program designed to prepare physicians for comprehensive careers in orthopedic surgery and musculoskeletal medicine. The residency is conducted through major NYMC-affiliated tertiary care institutions including Westchester Medical Center, Metropolitan Hospital, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, and Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, providing extensive exposure to both adult and pediatric orthopedic conditions.
  • The residency curriculum provides comprehensive education in orthopedic trauma, sports medicine, adult reconstruction, spine surgery, pediatric orthopedics, hand surgery, foot and ankle surgery, musculoskeletal oncology, and rehabilitation medicine. Residents participate in inpatient care, emergency orthopedic trauma management, outpatient specialty clinics, rehabilitation services, and operative procedures across high-volume academic medical centers.
  • Residents receive progressive surgical responsibility throughout training and gain hands-on experience in fracture fixation, arthroscopy, joint replacement surgery, spinal procedures, tendon and ligament reconstruction, pediatric deformity correction, and minimally invasive orthopedic techniques. The program strongly emphasizes operative competency, patient safety, evidence-based practice, and multidisciplinary musculoskeletal care.
  • The academic curriculum includes orthopedic grand rounds, cadaver laboratories, journal clubs, morbidity and mortality conferences, board review sessions, fracture conferences, simulation training, and multidisciplinary case discussions. Residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research, orthopedic publications, national conferences, and quality improvement initiatives throughout residency training.
  • NYMC’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery is recognized for its strong trauma and reconstructive surgery exposure, academic mentorship, and collaborative multidisciplinary care model. Faculty members provide guidance in surgical skill development, clinical reasoning, research productivity, and fellowship preparation. Residents also receive exposure to sports teams, rehabilitation medicine, and advanced orthopedic technologies including robotic-assisted procedures and modern implant systems.
  • Graduates are prepared for American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) certification and future careers in general orthopedics, trauma surgery, sports medicine, spine surgery, pediatric orthopedics, academic medicine, and subspecialty fellowship training
