Hematology & Oncology Fellowship

• Completion of MD / DO or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program before starting fellowship
• Must be eligible for ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) certification in Internal Medicine
• International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must have:
• Valid ECFMG certification
• Required USMLE completion
• Candidates should demonstrate interest in hematology, oncology, cancer research, and clinical care
• Applicants must meet UNC Graduate Medical Education (GME) eligibility requirements
• Must fulfill required medical licensure and visa requirements (if applicable)

The Hematology & Oncology Fellowship at UNC School of Medicine is an advanced subspecialty training program designed to provide comprehensive education and clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and cancers. The fellowship combines training in hematology, medical oncology, cancer biology, and multidisciplinary cancer care, preparing physicians to manage a wide range of malignant and non-malignant hematologic conditions and solid tumors. Fellows receive clinical training through inpatient and outpatient oncology services, hematology clinics, cancer treatment programs, and multidisciplinary tumor boards. The program emphasizes evidence-based cancer care, chemotherapy and targeted therapies, immunotherapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation exposure, clinical research, and academic development. The fellowship prepares graduates for careers as independent hematologists-oncologists in academic medical centers, cancer institutes, and clinical practice settings.

2. Selected candidates are invited for interviews with fellowship faculty
3. Final selection is based on:

• Clinical performance
• Academic achievements
• Research experience
• Interest in hematology and oncology
• Interview performance

2. Selected fellows complete UNC GME requirements and begin fellowship training
