Minimum Requirement

• Completion of a 3-year Gastroenterology (GI) Fellowship

Alternative Pathway (Internal Candidates)

• Must be a GI fellow at Johns Hopkins
• Eligible after:
• Completing 2 years of GI fellowship
• Meeting all GI competencies (ABIM/AASLD pathway)

Additional Standard Requirements

• MD/DO (or equivalent medical degree)
• Completed Internal Medicine residency
• Eligible for U.S. medical license / board certification (ABIM)
• For international applicants:
• ECFMG certification
• Valid visa eligibility

The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is a one-year, ACGME-accredited advanced training program designed to develop expertise in the management of complex liver diseases and liver transplantation. Based at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, the fellowship provides comprehensive exposure to both inpatient and outpatient hepatology care, with fellows spending approximately six months each in clinical settings. Trainees work closely with a multidisciplinary liver transplant team, gaining hands-on experience in pre- and post-transplant patient management, transplant evaluation, and immunosuppressive therapy. The program also includes participation in endoscopy, transplant surgery observation, and leadership roles in transplant rounds and selection meetings. In addition to strong clinical training, fellows are encouraged to engage in research activities under expert mentorship. Upon completion, fellows achieve competencies defined by ABIM and ACGME, preparing them for academic careers and leadership roles in hepatology and transplant medicine.
