Fellowship in Rheumatology

• Must have an MD / DO or equivalent medical degree
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency
• Must be board eligible or board certified in Internal Medicine
• Eligible for U.S. medical licensure
• ECFMG certification required for International Medical Graduates (IMGs)
• Strong interest and background in rheumatology, autoimmune, and inflammatory diseases
• Must meet UNC Graduate Medical Education (GME) requirements
• Successful completion leads to board eligibility in Rheumatology

The Rheumatology Fellowship Program at UNC School of Medicine (UNCSOM), Chapel Hill is an advanced ACGME-accredited subspecialty training program designed to provide comprehensive education and clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management of autoimmune, inflammatory, and musculoskeletal diseases. The program offers extensive clinical exposure through inpatient consultation services, outpatient rheumatology clinics, and specialty care settings, where fellows manage complex conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, vasculitis, inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue diseases, and other rheumatologic disorders. The fellowship emphasizes a balanced approach to clinical training, research, and academic development, providing opportunities to participate in clinical studies, multidisciplinary care, and advanced therapies including biologic and targeted treatments. Through mentorship and hands-on experience, fellows develop the skills required for independent practice and are prepared for careers in academic medicine, clinical rheumatology, and research-focused roles.
