Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery

1. MD or DO from an accredited medical school
2. Completed General Surgery residency accredited by ACGME
3. Eligibility to sit for the General Surgery qualifying examination
4. ATLS and PALS certification
5. Pennsylvania state medical license eligibility prior to starting fellowship
6. Satisfactory letters of recommendation, CV, personal statement, and training evaluations.

The Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children offers robust, hands-on training in pediatric surgical care for a wide breadth of conditions, from routine childhood surgical pathology to complex congenital and trauma cases. Fellows gain experience in high-volume operative settings, participate in neonatal and pediatric intensive care unit rotations, and manage surgical patients in both inpatient and outpatient clinics under the mentorship of experienced pediatric surgeons. The fellowship includes significant exposure to neonatal and pediatric intensive care, trauma surgery, minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques, and multidisciplinary collaboration. A unique component is the additional exposure at Shriner’s Hospital for Children, where fellows further develop skills in spinal surgical techniques. Fellows also participate in weekly didactic sessions including morbidity and mortality conferences, SCORE curriculum, journal clubs, and multidisciplinary surgical boards. The program emphasizes leadership, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and scholarly activity, preparing graduates for board certification and careers as pediatric surgeons in academic or clinical practice.
